Worship Beyond the Sanctuary

This Fall, let’s turn to prayer.

From Labor Day up until Advent, we will be spending time with poems and prayers written and prayed by some of the faithful who have gone before us.

Through these prayers, we can situate ourselves, in our present moment with our present anxieties, in the expanse of time, the tradition of Christian faith. We can let those who have gone before us witness to the faithfulness of God through their prayers.

– September 13 sermon

Below, please find three different opportunities to enter into this series in between services, as part of your personal or family devotions, or with a small group: the list of upcoming poems & Scripture readings, a study on the Lord’s prayer, and a book of poems and reflections titled “When Poets Pray” by Marilyn McEntyre.

We also invite you to these Sunday learning opportunities this fall: Jeff Munroe will be speaking on “When Poets Pray” on December 6, and Dr. Suzanne McDonald will be speaking on George Herbert on October 4.

Praying through Poetry: George Herbert
There are some poets who are so immersed in scripture, have such a deep relationship with God, and are able to express all of that so luminously, that they can become prayer-partners and faith-mentors for us. George Herbert is one of those. Together we will learn a little about his life, explore some of his poetry, and discover how his example can help us to find the words – and the courage – to turn the joys and the struggles of our relationship with God into prayers (and maybe even poems!) of our own.
